General information about model Mamod Minor 1

The minor 1 was the smalest engine produced by Mamod made. It was introduced in 1939. The Minor 1 was the cheapest engine in the Mamod range. Through the year the engine had several changes. It started as a flat base engine with a wick burner and disc flywheel, Through the years the engine evolved, It got a raised base, a solid fuel burner and a spoked flywheel along with some other smal changes. The Minor 1 was discontinued in march 1979 when it was replaced by the SP1. These engines are quite often to be seen at ebay, and can be picked up for quite reasonable prices, depending on the production period and condition.

Mamod Minor 1

I bought this engine of the UK ebay as a lot of three.

This page is about the engine in the middle. from the three engines, this was the one in the worst condition. There was a broken joint, the paint on the baseplate and firebox was very bad, and it was incredibly dirty. some pictures to give you a idea:

To get this engine in better shape I wanted to get it totally stripped down. When trying to remove the flywheel, I broke the crankshaft:

So after that I cutted the remains of the crankshaft and drilled out the rivet holding the boiler frame. With everything stripped from it I started cleaning the boiler with brasso, wich worked quite well.

Now I'll have to wait untill I get the tools and spares to make this a running engine again.

Update 11-02-2007

I've decided not to repair this engine anymore, I'm going to use it as spare parts.
